# The Honest Truth Most People Don’t Want to Hear
If you’ve ever looked in the mirror, grabbed the skin around your stomach, and thought “why is this the last place to change?” You’re not alone. Belly fat is easily the most common reason people reach out to me for coaching.
So let’s get this out of the way early. You cannot directly target belly fat.
There is no exercise, supplement, detox, or ab routine that specifically burns fat from your stomach. Anyone telling you otherwise is either misinformed or trying to sell you something. Fat loss doesn’t work that way. Your body decides where fat comes off first and where it hangs on the longest, and for most people, the stomach is stubborn by design.
That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it. It just means you need to understand how fat loss actually works.
Why “Targeting” Belly Fat Isn’t a Thing
Fat loss happens systemically, not locally. When you lose fat, your body pulls from stored fat all over, not from one specific area you’re training. You can train your abs every day and still have belly fat sitting on top if your overall body fat is high.
This is why people get frustrated. They’re working hard in the gym, sweating through workouts, and still not seeing their stomach change. The issue isn’t effort… it’s misunderstanding the process.
The only way belly fat comes down is through overall fat loss.
The Role of a Calorie Deficit
For fat loss to happen, you need to be in a calorie deficit. That simply means you’re consistently burning more energy than you’re taking in. It doesn’t mean starving yourself or cutting out every food you enjoy. It means eating in a way that supports fat loss while still being realistic for your lifestyle.
When you’re in a proper calorie deficit, your body has no choice but to use stored energy. Over time, that includes fat stored around the stomach. It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen evenly, but it does happen when consistency is there.
This is exactly how I approach fat loss with my HupsFit clients. No extremes, no crash diets, no “all or nothing” mindsets. Just a plan you can actually stick to.
How Belly Fat Got There in the First Place
Belly fat isn’t random. It’s usually the result of habits that have slowly built up over months or years.
Most people don’t realize they’re eating in a calorie surplus. Portion sizes creep up, liquid calories sneak in, weekends get out of hand, and snacks add up. Even “healthy” foods can contribute if the quantities are consistently higher than what your body needs.
On top of that, daily movement tends to be low. You might work out a few times per week, but if the rest of your day is spent sitting at a desk, driving, and relaxing on the couch, your total energy output stays fairly low. Exercise is important, but what you do outside the gym matters just as much.
Then there’s stress, something that’s massively overlooked. High stress levels mean higher cortisol, and chronically elevated cortisol makes fat loss harder, especially around the midsection. Poor sleep, demanding jobs, constant pressure, under-recovering from workouts, and aggressive dieting all contribute to this. I see this all the time with clients who feel like they’re “doing everything right” but still aren’t seeing the changes they want.
How to Actually Lose Belly Fat
Losing belly fat starts with dialing in nutrition in a way that makes sense for your life. This means creating a calorie deficit without making you miserable. High protein intake helps with muscle retention and satiety, balanced meals keep energy levels stable, and flexibility allows you to enjoy life without feeling like you’re constantly off track.
Training plays a big role as well. Strength training helps preserve muscle, improve body composition, and raise overall energy expenditure. It’s not about random workouts or doing more for the sake of doing more, it’s about structured training that progresses over time. That’s exactly how I program for my clients.
Daily movement is another piece people underestimate. Steps, walks, and general activity throughout the day add up far more than most realize. You don’t need to destroy yourself with cardio. You just need to move more consistently.
Equally important is managing stress and recovery. Fat loss isn’t just physical — it’s hormonal and mental too. Better sleep, appropriate training volume, and periods of maintenance instead of constant dieting all make a massive difference. With my clients, this is where we often see breakthroughs, especially for those who’ve been stuck for years.
And finally, patience matters. Belly fat is often the last place to go. That doesn’t mean nothing is working. It means your body is doing what it’s designed to do. Stay consistent long enough, and it will change.
The Harsh Truth
You don’t lose belly fat by chasing quick fixes or doing endless ab workouts. You lose it by eating in a calorie deficit, training consistently, moving more throughout the day, managing stress, and giving the process time.
This is the approach I take with every HupsFit client because it works in real life — not just in theory or on social media.
If you’re willing to be consistent and stop looking for shortcuts, the results will come.
It doesn’t get easier — you get better.
